Car Park Essen
When the new EON Administration building was constructed at the Essen fairgrounds, the previous fairgrounds parking lot had to be replaced by a parking garage. A portion of the parking garage was to be underground. For cost reasons, the design called for putting the parking garage beneath a landscaped green roof facing the EON high-rise building, and then to light and ventilate the lower levels through landscaped trenches generously laid out. 900 parking spots were created on three levels.
The facade of the parking levels above ground was made up of large, partially multi-layered metal-mesh elements, which lent the building an iridescent surface. The lighting from inside made the building’s volume mass come alive, at the same time evoking an impression of lightness.
